SBS TV's Speedweek, Australia's longest running motorsport program has moved from Sunday afternoon to Saturday afternoon during summer.

Speedweek which will be entering its ninth year on SBS in 2002 moved to its new timeslot of 3.30pm Saturdays from Sunday December 2 to allow motor racing enthusiasts to catch all of the track action at a more convenient time for Summer.

According to Speedweek producer Greg Sita the move to Saturday came about after conducting market research into when enthusiasts wanted to see the program.

"In summer months daylight saving and a mass of outdoor activities makes it difficult for fans to be home on Sunday afternoons to catch Speedweek, so we consulted many enthusiasts and targeted a mid afternoon Saturday time slot," said Greg Sita.

"Speedweek has an enormous following all over the country thanks to the wide variety of motor racing categories we cover," he added.

"Speedweek is particularly targeted towards covering categories that may not get coverage on the commercial networks from Speedway to drag racing, Formula Extreme Bikes, karting and even power boat racing.

"The show has an audience each week of almost half a million people around the country particularly in regional areas," said Greg.

"Drag racing and Speedway are both categories run at the highest professional level in Australia and attract more spectators trackside than any other types of motorsport but are ignored by the commercial networks.

"SBS Speedweek is the only place fans can catch speedway and drag racing on free to air TV and the new Saturday time slot is sure to prove popular over summer.

"Speedweek is aired 52 weeks a year and in its eight years on SBS it has never taken a break," said Thomson who has hosted the program for the last four years.
